At giffgaff, we are passionate about doing better and being better. As part of our continued effort to practice sustainable habits and reinforce a circular economy, we are actively promoting recycling, upcycling and refurbishing to reduce waste.

That’s why we’ve pulled together a handy guide containing all the information that you need on recycling and to share some top tips from our community who share our sustainability commitment to reducing waste.

What does recycling mean?

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as waste and turning them into new products.

What are the benefits of recycling?

Recycling helps to create a healthier environment. It reduces the need for extracting, refining and processing raw materials, all of which cause air and water pollution. As recycling saves energy, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change.

What are the things that you can recycle?

  • Plastic bottles & containers
  • Paper & cardboard
  • Tin, aluminium and steel cans
  • Glass bottles, containers & jars
  • Phones

Top tips to improve your recycling

Tip 1: Donate things that you don’t need.

Sending things to charity shops when I no longer need them, books especially, is my favourite kind of recycling.

Tip 2: Be creative with meals.

I put leftovers from meals in 1 portion trays, freeze them, and have a mix and match no prep dinner.

Tip 3: Set up multi-section bins.

Set-up a multi-section bin in an easily accessible, high-traffic part of the house and have each section clearly labelled with what should be put in it.

Tip 4: Utilising food waste.

I recently bought a bokashi. We put in all food waste, yes even bones and fish skin. After a couple of weeks, it’s buried or mixed with compost.

Tip 5: Reusing old bags

I only use my Hessian bags and buy fruit and vegetables loose, it’s surprising how much cheaper they are bought loose.

Tip 6: Buying refurbished phones and selling old phones

giffgaff is helping with refurbished phones, which saves us money and cuts down on waste.
