How to recycle e-waste responsibly
3 minute read
We all know that e-waste is a big problem. Every year, millions of tons of electronic devices are discarded, and much of this waste ends up in landfills. This is a problem because e-waste contains hazardous materials that can pollute the environment and harm human health.
So what can we do about it? Well, the first step is to understand what e-waste is and why it’s an issue.
What is e-waste and why is it a problem?
Very simply, e-waste or ‘electronic waste’, is any discarded electrical or electronic equipment. This includes things like computers, TVs, mobile phones, printers, and other appliances.
E-waste contains hazardous materials, such as lead, mercury, and cadmium. These materials can pollute the environment if they are not disposed of properly, so it’s important never to just throw your old electronics in the bin.
When e-waste is dumped in landfills, the hazardous materials can leach into the soil and water. This can contaminate the environment and harm human health.
E-waste can also be burned, which releases harmful pollutants into the air. These pollutants can cause respiratory problems, cancer, and other health problems.

Yikes. So what can we do about e-waste?
There are a few things we can do to reduce the amount of e-waste we let escape, including:
- Cutting down on the new electronics you buy: the best way to reduce e-waste is to buy less stuff. If you can, repair your electronics instead of replacing them.
- Recycling your e-waste: If you do need to get rid of an electronic device, make sure to recycle it properly. There are many recycling programs available, including those offered by your local government and many electronics retailers.
Taking action on e-waste
The UK government has taken steps to address the issue of e-waste. In 2012, they introduced the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations. These regulations require businesses and consumers to recycle e-waste responsibly.
