A new lineup of 2019 iPhones have been announced and are now available for pre-order. Apple revealed the new Apple Watch 5, and tons more Apple services and hardware refreshes were unveiled at the Apple Special Event. Here’s the full recap.

We’ll of course jump into the big stories of the night, the iPhone lineup, the new 7th generation iPad, followed by the Apple Watch 5. After, we’ll show the tidbits you may also be happily surprised to hear about, such as Apple TV.

The New iPhones

Starting with the three big stars of the show, we have the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Pro, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max. This year there has been a big emphasis on improving the cameras on these smartphones, as well as making great adjustments throughout. First, we’ll go over the new adjustments, and then we’ll go into the beastly new triple camera setups. Face ID is back and it has been improved to be usable at more extreme angles. You can also expect faster Face ID recognition too.

The new phones are water and dust resistant with an IP68 rating. You have new battery improvements, so expect 5 hours extra battery life on the 11 Pro Max compared to the iPhone XS Max.

You can also get 4 hours more on the iPhone 11 Pro over the iPhone XS. The chip inside has been upgraded, too. It’s the A13 Bionic. It’s Apple’s most powerful chip yet. Expect incredible machine learning powers thanks to the neural engine. You should expect 20% better performance and 40% lower power consumption when using the efficiency cores, or 30% lower power when using the performance cores. The GPU is also 20% faster and uses 40% less power.

Next let’s look at the displays on the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max. The entry level, the iPhone 11, has a 6.1” LCD display with a resolution of 828x1792 pixels - still retina, and still beautiful, but the Pro handsets step it up a notch. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max have OLED displays.

This means incredible contrast - deeper blacks and more difference in color. HDR is included in the display and the display itself is 15% more energy efficient. The display quality is almost identical on both handsets, but the iPhone 11 Pro has a 5.8 inch display, whilst the 11 Pro Max has a huge 6.5" panel. Both Pro handsets have 6GB RAM, whilst the iPhone 11 has 4GB RAM. Still far more than iOS would need. Speaking of which, all three handsets will get iOS 13 out of the box.

Let’s talk about the cameras. The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max share the same camera specifications so we’ll start there. The triple camera setup features a 12 megapixel wide camera, a 12 megapixel telephoto, and another 12 megapixel ultrawide. AI is working behind the scenes to make snapping incredible photos super easy. Smartphone manufacturers have been using AI in their cameras for years now but Apple are really getting good at it with the iPhone 11 range. 4K60fps recording is possible and with the new advanced video editing app you can add filters, cut, and make adjustments to your videos from the iPhone itself.

Apple has upped the camera software game too. You can record with multiple cameras at the same time to get multiple angle shots of the same scene. Or, use the front facing and rear facing camera to have a three-way conversation with you, the recipient and whoever may be in front of you. Or maybe just use that to show your caller whatever scenic views may be on display because the front facing camera on all three iPhones is an impressive 12 megapixel snapper.

The New Apple Watch 5

The Apple Watch is back. It has become a big part in helping people with their lives. Apple showcased some stories on how the Apple Watch helped with elderly people who have fallen, or with those with heart problems. They are doing more work with new studies to learn more about general health and how the Apple Watch could help.

So what’s actually new with the Apple Watch Series 5? Well, we get a new display, called the Low Temperature Polysilicon Oxide display. Yeah, erm. LTPO works. It basically uses an ultra low power, always-on display tech and ambient light sensor. It has a dynamic refresh rate up to 60Hz. Of course, all watch faces will be updated to accommodate the new always on display. The Watch Series 5 features new designs and all watches use 100% recycled aluminium.

New iPad 7th Generation

The iPad is back too. The 7th generation iPad marks a great entry opportunity for all iPad users. Like all new iPads, the iPad 7th gen will run the new iPadOS, a modified version of iOS designed to provide a more functional and productive experience. iPadOS features include split view for multitasking apps, floating keyboard for typing whilst providing a clearer view, and the new videos and photos app. Finally, iPadOS brings a desktop-like file browser for managing your files.

Inside you get the A10 fusion chip, which is a few generations old, but this is no problem when you consider the fluidity of iPadOS. We are also getting a larger 10.2 inch Retina display on the 7th generation iPad. And, just like the Apple Watch Series 5, the iPad is made from 100% recycled aluminium.

Apple Arcade

Apple Arcade will launch on September 19 and it will cost £4.99 for a family subscription. You’ll get access to 100 games at launch and more will be added over time. Ultimately, it’s a more premium gaming service that ensures you are getting the best mobile games possible. The standard iOS app store will still be there for other games too.

Apple TV+

new apple tv

Apple TV+ is Apple’s entry into the TV streaming industry. Apple isn’t coming in without a flash, either. Apple TV Plus will get exclusive content, including a new Jason Mamoa starring show called See. Apple TV+ will launch on November 1 and there will be plenty of shows added each month. The same £4.99 price tag has been applied for Apple TV+. Yeah, that’s cheap considering the competition. Buy yearly Apple products? You’re going to like this next part. If you purchase an Apple device, either an iPhone, Mac, iPad, or Apple TV, you’ll get a year free subscription.
