Hey there, eco-warriors. National Recycling Week 2023 is upon us, from October 16-22. To celebrate, we’ve put together a list of everything you need to know about this special event, as well as some of our top recycling tips.

What is Recycle Week?

Recycle Week is the week where everyone from businesses to local governments come together for one very special cause: recycling. So let’s dive into the juicier details.

Why is Recycle Week important?

Did you know that 88% of UK households recycle, but more than half miss items that could be recycled at home? Well, this week aims to correct that. It’s time to change our recycling habits for the better.

5 recycling ideas to try at home

1. Audit your plastics: Spot any missed opportunities

Take a stroll around your home, especially in rooms like the kitchen, bathroom, and even your home office. Identify plastics that you’ve been tossing into the trash, such as shampoo bottles, food containers, or disposable pens. Sort them and add them to your recycling bin.

2. Tech recycling: More than just phones

While we love that you send us your old phones and SIM cards for responsible recycling, there are other tech gadgets you can recycle too. Think old chargers, USB drives, and even defunct computer mice. Many electronic stores have drop-off points for recyclable tech items, so just have a quick Google.

3. DIY crafting: Upcycle with purpose

Instead of tossing that old plastic bottle, why not turn it into a bird feeder? Cut out windows, fill it with birdseed, and hang it outside. Not only are you recycling, but you’re also doing your bit for local wildlife. Double win!

4. 48-hour zero waste challenge: Track, reduce, reuse

Take on a 48-hour zero waste challenge. During this time, monitor all the waste you produce. Try and reduce it by swapping single-use items with reusable alternatives and recycling what you need to. It’s a great exercise to understand how much waste you usually produce.

5. Composting: Small spaces, big impact

No garden? No problem. Compact composting kits are available that fit right under your sink. Start composting food scraps like fruit peels, coffee grounds, and eggshells. It’s a great way to recycle organic waste and enrich your indoor plants or share with a community garden.
