The best free health and fitness apps
5 minute read

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions people make is to exercise more or take better care of their physical and mental health. But did you know that a whopping 43% of people give up on their resolutions by February? Crazy stuff.
Make yourself one of the 57% who crush their new year goals with the help of a health and fitness app. Like a personal trainer in your pocket, a health and fitness app might just be the key to a happier, healthier you.
Here are some of our favourite health and fitness apps to try for yourself. And they’re free. Get in.
Home Workout

If you’re looking for quick and easy workouts to do at home, Home Workout is for you. You don’t need any equipment as all the exercises are focused on using your body weight.
You can tailor your workout plan to your personal needs. Whether that’s building muscle, toning up or just generally staying fit, the app will create a personalised plan so you get the result you’re looking for.
MyFitnessPal
If you need an easy way to track your nutrition progress, MyFitnessPal is perfect. It’s a simple and quick way to track your diet and any progress you make.
MyFitnessPal helps you track your diet with simple graphs. You can even see the ratio of different nutrients in your meals such as protein, fat and carbohydrates to make sure you’re getting everything you need. And you can tailor your meal plan with the help of a registered dietician. Clever, right?
MindShift

Mental health is just as important as physical health. MindShift uses CBT techniques to help you manage your mental health. There are guided meditations, tips and tricks and experiments to challenge your current thought patterns.
MindShift is marketed to teenagers and young adults to help them give a name to the way they’re feeling, but it works for people of all ages too.
Just Dance Now

If you don’t enjoy going to the gym or doing structured workouts, give Just Dance Now a try. Dancing is one of the best ways to keep fit without feeling like you’re actually exercising, and it’s a great way to blow off steam and have some fun.
Choose from their collection of hit songs and follow the on-screen dancer. Even just two songs a day will have you feeling a difference.
Noom
Noom is a food tracking app with a difference. It focuses on the psychology of healthy and balanced eating and uses mini-courses to help you train your brain into thinking differently.
They offer over 1000 lessons as well as one-to-one coaching to help you change your habits. You’ll also have access to unlimited group support so you can all work towards attaining your goals together.
Molehill Mountain

Molehill Mountain is specifically designed to help autistic people track and manage their mental health, but it’s helpful for other types of neurodiversity as well. Neurodivergent people often have different stressors and anxieties to neurotypical people, and this app caters to that.
The app helps you track your worries, what you did in a day and how you’re feeling throughout the day. You can log several different aspects of your mental health so you can see which areas you need to work on.
Grokker

If you prefer a more laid back form of exercise, you’ll probably want to try yoga. Grokker offers several different programmes depending on what you want to get out of doing yoga.
You’ll be able to tailor your programme to focus on things like strength training, mindfulness and muscle toning. Grokker’s videos and tutorials are all filmed by experts, so you’ll know you’re in safe hands.
Cronometer
If you’re serious about what you put into your body, Cronometer is definitely the app for you. Not only does it track calories, proteins and carbohydrates, but it also lets you know what vitamins and minerals are in the food you eat.
The app also integrates with other apps you have, such as the Health App, and it can even connect to a FitBit, meaning all your exercise and movement can be tracked automatically.
Smiling Mind
Smiling Mind is an app developed by the Australian non-profit of the same name. Their aim is to use prevention-focused methods to improve the mental wellbeing of millions of people across the world.
Smiling Mind has meditations, guided and free, for all kinds of people. It offers family meditation sessions, sessions specifically for work and education settings, and many for general wellbeing.
