Most cameras these days can deliver reliable results in good light, but selfie cameras are a little trickier. Especially as phones have lost their bezels in favour of screen-maximising designs.

Never fear though, giffgaff has you covered. Here are six phones that buck the trend, offering up delectable selfies with minimal effort.

What makes a good selfie camera phone?

When shopping for a good selfie camera phone, you’re looking for ticks across three key areas:

  1. High-resolution front camera: A high-resolution front camera will capture more detail in your selfies, which is especially important if you want to zoom in or crop your photos. A good front-facing camera should have at least 12 megapixels.

  2. Good low-light performance: A good selfie camera phone should take sharp and clear selfies even in low-light conditions. Look for a phone with a front camera that has a large sensor and a wide aperture.

  3. Specialist software features: Some selfie camera phones have software features that can help you take better selfies, such as portrait mode, which blurs the background of your selfies, and beauty mode, which can smooth out your skin and make your eyes look brighter.

So, are we ready to see the line-up? Here are the best selfie camera phones for 2023.

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Google Pixel 7 Pro

Google’s latest flagship phone is also one of its best models when it comes to that all-important front-facing camera.

The Pixel 7 Pro takes advantage of Google’s excellent image processing and also comes with a wider field of view than most other Android phones on the market. This makes it a reliable option for selfies, particularly if you don’t like the overly processed look of some iPhones or the mega-saturated tones of Samsung’s Galaxy collection.

Samsung Galaxy Flip 4

Samsung Galaxy Flip 4

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 folds in half like a Game Boy Advance SP (the best of the Game Boys), making it one of the best selfie camera phones out there.

Hold on, let me back up. The idea here is that, because the rear cameras are pointing at you when the phone is folded, you can just double-press the side key to launch into Quick Shot mode. From here, the screen next to those cameras lights up with a viewfinder, and you can line up the perfect selfie; even in portrait mode if you like.

The advantage is that you’re using a much bigger and better sensor than the average front-facer, and you get hugely improved photos as a result. It’s only cheating a little.

If this one is a bit too expensive, the previous models can perform a similar trick!

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

Apple iPhone 14 Pro

After three Android entries, it’s finally time to check out Apple.

The iPhone 14 Pro’s 12-megapixel front-facer takes brilliant selfies, with great handling of skin tones, good auto-focus and wholly detailed results. The portrait mode adds an artistic depth of field effect to your photos and is top-notch on the quality front.

Finally, the iPhone 14 Pro is also capable of 4K DolbyVision recording, which allows you to take well-exposed and stable videos; a nice complement to all those photos you’ll be taking.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 can do a similar trick to the Galaxy Z Flip 4, using its rear cameras as its selfie cams, but with better camera equipment and a much bigger screen. Taking selfies in this way is significantly easier and tends to achieve better results than using the front camera.

As with its rear shots, Samsung’s photos can come out a little over-saturated, but detail, exposure and other metrics are often spot-on. This is an awesome choice, but it’s also an incredibly expensive phone that you’ll need to embrace for all its features, not just its selfie camera.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the ultimate selfie camera phone for 2023, not because of any weird tricks but because it just produces excellent results.

To achieve this, Samsung has stuffed an incredible 40-megapixel selfie cam into the front of the phone, delivering super clear selfies that you’d never guess were taken with a front-facing camera in terms of their quality.

Given that the S23 Ultra also costs less than its folding cousin, this makes it our top pick overall and a wonderful selfie cam by almost any metric.
